The end of Gingerbread Week

We've been having fun talking about Gingerbread this week - gingerbread cookies, gingerbread men, gingerbread houses.... We've done some fabulous gingerbread coloring pages, we've glued cinnamon and ginger on gingerbread man shapes to enjoy the smell. We made delicious-smelling ornaments using applesauce and cinnamon (use equal parts, roll out, cut with a cookie cutter and put a hole in the top for a string, then slow-cook in the oven to dry out. When dry tie on a festive ribbon and hang from your tree!)

Today, to round out the week, we made "gingerbread cookies". Only I don't really like gingerbread. And to make it you need some weird ingredients I don't generally keep laying around - like molassas (yuck!). So, on the advice of a very smart friend, we just added some brown coloring and cinnamon to some sugar cookie dough! Smells kinda spicy, it's the right color. You tell me, looks like gingerbread, right?

The kids all got to help cut out the gingerbread boy shapes:

Then after they were all cooled, everyone got to decorate a couple to take home:

I finished 'em off so we could have some at snack-time. And we ended up with a whole slew of 'em!

My kids wanted to get in on the gingerbread action so we got a kit and they created this gorgeous gingerbread house last night!

We all had fun with our activities this week! Christmas time sure lets us do some yummy, umm I mean, creative, crafts!

Love the idea of coloring and adding cinnamon to sugar cookie dough...I'm so doing that! I also have wanted to do the applesauce/cinnamon ornaments, but couldn't remember the quantities of each, so thanks for posting that!

All those goodies look great!
