Guess where we went this weekend?
Chloe's Brownie troop worked hard fund-raising this year and voted to put their funds toward a fun trip. They decided on a troop to the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha. And not just a trip to the zoo, but an overnight camp-out IN the zoo.
We arrived Sunday evening as the zoo was closing, met our guide, unloaded our gear and headed over to one of my favorite buildings in the zoo -the aquarium! We dropped our stuff and the kids jumped right into some activities with our campout leaders. We got after-hour tours of our home for the night, the aquarium, as well as the Creatures of the Night exhibit. Since it was night at the Creatures of the Night exhibit, the lights were actually coming on so the animals could have their "day" and their rest time so we got to see things really well!
After our tours, we had a scavenger hunt, some snacks and popped in a movie for the girls. Chloe and I were tuckered out so we headed to "bed" early. We bunked by the big wall of the aquarium just outside the tunnel (because I'm a claustrophobic wimp that didn't relish the thought of sleeping in a stuffy tunnel under thousands of gallons of water...) These are some of the things I'd see through the night when I'd wake up - pretty cool!
In the morning our leaders woke us up bright and early at 6am - we got dressed, packed up, ate breakfast and headed out for a morning hike - we got to check out the big cats, the gorillas and the new Madagascar exhibits before anyone else got there! We also got great little tidbits of info from the leaders at each exhibit - I learned so much more during this trip to the zoo than I ever had before!
Our official camp-out was done by 9:00a.m., but we got to spend the rest of the day exploring the zoo and checking out all the critters!
It was lots of fun for everyone and we were home in plenty of time yesterday to crash out and rest up to begin our week!
