My family's favorite!

OK, another food post, but this time in honor of my friend, Laura! When the weather turns cooler and we want good old fashioned comfort food, I am asked to make Bierocks. Bierocks are made from the simplest of ingredients, but are so so good on a cool night. I don't really have a recipe, but I'm going to just walk you through the steps.

Start out by thawing some frozen rolls (or bread balls as my kids call them) - for as many bierocks as you want. You don't want them to rise, just not to be hard. I microwave them for about 2 minutes on 60% or so.

Brown 1 pound of hamburger, with as many diced onions as you care to put in.

While your meat is cooking, lightly flour your counter or a pastry board and roll out them balls of dough until they're flat and maybe 4 inches in diameter. Set aside.

Now that your meat is done, chop a small head of cabbage, add it to the pan of meat, season with salt and a lot of pepper. Add a 1/4 cup of water or so to really get some steam going. Cover and cook until cabbage is tender.

When cabbage is done, spoon some of the cabbage/meat mixture into the center of each rolled-out ball. Bring edges of dough to center to create a pocket. Place, seam side down, on a baking sheet. When all the dough is stuffed, cook in a 375 degree oven for 15-20 minutes until golden-brown.

Serve with plain ol' yellow mustard.

Here's the beauty of how they look when they're done.

Note that they are not gray and pasty looking. Note also, that I "plated" my meal - using the breakable plates - just like my friend, Laura, did on her blog not long ago. However, my plate ended up looking more like a sick smiley-face when I was done. Oh well, fabulous meal. All my kids ate at least 2 of them and were very happy! Give 'em a try!

Okay, that is exactly how I make mine other than I have never tried making them with frozen dough (that would be soooo much easier) and we also have never eaten them with mustard. Since my husband doesn't like cabbage I make his less the cabbage and add velveeta cheese. (Yes, that makes it more like a cheeseburger but he like them this way).

What a great idea. I love them and always thought they were to much work. Thanks for sharing a quick and easy way to have that wonderful, warm comfort food that makes the world go round. Tammy
